What you may not sell
Our Acceptable Use Policy applies to everything you publish. Charging for a document adds a second question — not just may this exist, but do you have the right to sell it.
These rules apply to any document with paid access switched on. Breaking them can mean the document is disabled, your ability to sell is withdrawn, or your account is suspended.
You must own it, or have the right to sell it
Section titled “You must own it, or have the right to sell it”You may only sell content you created, or that you hold a licence permitting resale. This is the rule that matters most, and the one most often broken by accident.
Not allowed:
- Books, journals, reports or research papers you did not write and do not hold resale rights to
- Course material, worksheets or teaching packs belonging to someone else
- Exam papers, mark schemes, past papers or answer keys
- Templates, designs, photography or illustration licensed to you for personal or client use only
- Content assembled substantially from other people’s work without permission
- Anything bearing a third party’s trade marks or branding without their agreement
“I found it online” is not a licence. Neither is “it was free somewhere else”.
You must describe it honestly
Section titled “You must describe it honestly”The preview and the description are how a buyer decides. They must represent what they are actually getting.
Not allowed:
- A preview that misrepresents the length, quality or contents of the document
- Claiming a document is written, endorsed or certified by someone when it is not
- Selling a document that is substantially empty, duplicated, or padded
Regulated and restricted content
Section titled “Regulated and restricted content”Some material cannot be sold here at all, either because we will not host it or because Stripe’s own restricted businesses rules forbid it.
Not allowed:
- Financial, legal, medical or tax advice presented as professional guidance without the qualifications and registrations to give it
- Material that would breach financial-promotion rules in your jurisdiction
- Anything already prohibited under our Acceptable Use Policy — including illegal content, content that sexualises minors, incitement, and malware
Two gatekeepers, not one
Section titled “Two gatekeepers, not one”Selling on Living Page means passing both:
- Us — these rules and the Acceptable Use Policy
- Stripe — their restricted businesses list, checked when your account is verified and on an ongoing basis
Stripe can restrict or close a connected account independently of anything we do. If they do, you cannot take payments here regardless of your standing with us.
If you see something
Section titled “If you see something”If you believe a document being sold breaches these rules — particularly if it is your work being sold without permission — report it. Tell us the link and what the problem is. Copyright complaints are taken seriously and acted on.
What happens when a rule is broken
Section titled “What happens when a rule is broken”Depending on severity, we may:
- Disable paid access on the document
- Remove the document
- Withdraw your ability to sell
- Suspend or close the account
Where sales have already happened, we may require refunds. Serious cases — particularly repeat copyright infringement — are handled without notice.
